Sports, Athletes & Mental Health: What can we learn from Sports Psychology in relation to Workplaces

Professional athletes perform at the highest level of human potential and yet they are still human. They go thru the same challenges, pressure, and stress all of us experience, perhaps even more so as they can be competing in a global stage, in the public eye, vulnerable to everyone and the media's criticism, feedback and judgement. The effects of mental health on elite sports athletes has been trending on recent news. Most notable is professional tennis player Naomi Osaka who withdrew from the French Open after declining to do press conferences due to personal mental health concerns. But what can we learn from sports psychology especially in the age of social media where athletes today are under scrutiny not only from the press and media but also from fans and followers of the sport? Elite athletes have more to deal with these days, performing at the highest level, training to push physical boundaries in pursuit of 'gold' and recognition, getting feedback from all fronts, from coaches, team mates, fans perhaps even friends and family? How can managers apply these learnings in the workplace when delivering feedback, especially negative ones to team members? Join Emi Golding (WMHI Director of Psychology) and Peter Diaz (WMHI CEO) in this episode of Mental Health TV where they share insights on the sports psychology of athletes, dealing with mental health and how it relates to organizations and workplace dynamics.
