The Digestive System (पाचन तंत्र) is responsible for breaking down food into simpler substances that can be absorbed by the body to provide energy and nutrients. It is one of the most vital systems of the human body. 🩺 Main Organs of the Digestive System: Mouth (मुख / Buccal Cavity): Digestion begins here. Teeth help in chewing (mechanical digestion). Saliva (produced by salivary glands) contains the enzyme Salivary Amylase, which breaks down starch into sugar. Pharynx and Esophagus (ग्रसनी और अन्ननलिका): The swallowed food passes through the esophagus by peristaltic movement (wave-like muscular contractions). Stomach (आमाशय): A muscular sac that secretes Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Pepsin enzyme. HCl kills harmful bacteria, and Pepsin starts protein digestion. The food becomes a semi-liquid substance called chyme. Small Intestine (छोटी आंत): The most important part of digestion and absorption. Liver, Pancreas, and Gallbladder release digestive juices into the small intestine. Pancreatic juice contains enzymes like Trypsin, Amylase, and Lipase. Bile juice (from liver) emulsifies fats (breaks them into small droplets). Villi in the small intestine absorb nutrients into the bloodstream. Large Intestine (बड़ी आंत): Absorbs water and salts from undigested food. Remaining waste is stored in the rectum and expelled through the anus. 💡 Key Points for Exams Digestive enzymes work only at optimum pH and temperature. Bile juice has no enzymes but helps in fat digestion. The small intestine is the longest part of the alimentary canal. The liver is the largest gland in the human body. The pancreas acts as both exocrine and endocrine gland.
