Airborne Operation to Destroy a Massive Flak Tower - Der Flaktürm - Medal of Honor: Airborne

The Airborne has been tasked with taking out a German Flak Tower. These massive towers were were large, above-ground, anti-aircraft blockhouses, operated by the Luftwaffe to defend against Allied strategic air raids on cities during World War II. They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of local civilians. This one refuses to fall to our bombing missions, so command is sending in the Airborne to take it out directly from within. This will be the final test for our Airborne Unit. "Coming out of the cloud bank, we could see tracers coming up from many angles. There was a tremendous racket such as experienced when flying through hail." - Radio Operator Roger Airgood Clip Source - Medal of Honor: Airborne Mission - Flying Through Hail Missions Trivia: -The Flak Tower shown in this mission is based on a real-life tower that is still standing in Germany today - But not in Essen. -There was never an airborne invasion of Essen from the air as this mission depicts. Operation Varsity's main goal (around Wesel) was mainly farmland and the Rhine to the west. Only small towns are in the vicinity. Essen is to the South East but far away from the drop zones. In real life, there has been no record of any missions undertaken to destroy flak towers such as the one in the mission. There has never been a Flak tower in Essen.
