After a superb start from third place, Max Verstappen had already taken the lead in the F1 race on the straight, so as they approached the first corner, Lewis Hamilton was the overtaking driver trying to regain his position. In our previous review of the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix, when we analyzed the incident between these two drivers, we found that if the overtaking driver is behind at corner exit, it is their responsibility to avoid contact. Therefore, in our case, Lewis was obliged to take action to avoid a collision with Max, and as we see, he did. However, he had no choice but to go off-track and bounce around the curbs. Considering that this was the first lap, when the stewards are more lenient about incidents, the decision not to penalize Verstappen for this incident, in my opinion, was absolutely correct. Under the Safety Car, Perez lost control of his car and spun off the track. He quickly regained control and returned, but by that time two rivals had passed him. Seeing them slowing, Perez interpreted this as a sign that they were trying to regain his lost ground, which he happily took advantage of, completely forgetting the Formula One rule that prohibits any overtaking under the Safety Car. You might ask, then, why were these two allowed to move ahead of Sergio? The tricky part is that they performed this maneuver while Checo was off the track, and in that case, gaining ground isn't considered overtaking. Kimi Raikkonen also made a mistake and spun off the track, also losing several positions, but unlike Perez, he didn't try to regain them. It seemed like everything was in order and there was nothing to complain about, but after the race, the Formula 1 marshals issued the Finn an even larger penalty, namely a 10-second stop-and-go. However, since the race was already over, they simply added 30 seconds to Kimi's final result, knocking him out of the points. But how could this be? If a driver fails to find his proper position at the restart, he is obligated to enter the Formula 1 pit lane and start from there. In Kimi's case, the restart was carried out under the safety car, and as we just learned with Sergio, overtaking is prohibited under the safety car. This means that after Raikkonen's exit, he couldn't regain his lost position. In this case, he was in the wrong position at the restart and was obligated to enter the pit lane and start only after the entire field had passed him. The final results of the 2021 Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix were as follows: 1. Max Verstappen / Red Bull - Red Bull Racing 2. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes - Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport 3.
