The Real Reason Why Giannis Can’t Beat the Celtics Giannis Antetokounmpo is a well known force around the basketball world. But last night against the Celtics he found himself struggling to get a bucket and was missing easy layups at the rim. We are going to break down what really happened, and how the Celtics managed to shut down the Greek Freak. G1 - Right from the start, Giannis gets the ball at the free throw line, and as we can see there are 4 defenders in the paint, and Tatum is looking just in case he chooses to go from there. Antetokounmpo does just that as he tries to bully his way inside, Jayson helps, and as Giannis makes the spin move, Horford is already there to contest and this ends up in a bad miss. G2 - Here, Mathews passes the ball to Giannis early in the offense so it’s just Brown between him and the basket. Time Lord notices that and steps in just in time to block his dunk attempt. G3 - Again, this time he’s posted up against Big Al, obviously he is stronger, but as soon as he takes two dribbles, he’s already surrounded by Smart and Williams. Despite having his shooters wide open at the 3 point line, Antetokounmpo puts his head down but still misses the floater. G4 - And when you can’t get yourself an easy bucket at the rim, then nothing goes your way. G5 - Giannis was left all alone whenever he got the ball at the 3 point line, yet he couldn’t convert. G6 - He shot just 37.6% from the field and went 0/5 from downtown. G7 - The Celtics crowded the paint, preventing Giannis from easy drives to the rim and forcing him to take mid-range shots or 3s. G9 - His frustration was evident and it was clear that Boston’s defense got the best of him. G10 - Despite his struggles, he remained aggressive and continued to attack, finishing the night with 24 PTS and 7 rebounds. Khris Middleton scored 13 PTS but left the game in the 3rd quarter after taking an elbow to the face by Jayson Tatum. Besides them, only Bobby Portis scored in double digits, which was way too little for this match-up. Coming out of a 51 point career high for him, Jrue Holiday shot just 2/8 from the field and was nowhere to be found. And Jo Ingles, Jae Crowder and Grayson Allen all blend in the gray, as they were often beaten on the first step, mostly by Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Brown especially exposed the old legs by making the simplest back cuts to the rim on multiple occasions. He ended up with 30 points, and his buddy JT got 10 more, shooting lights out 8/10 from long range. He even got the Greek Freak shook on this play coming out of the screen as he drained another 3. Al Horford was another brilliant Celtic last night, as he shot 4/6 from downtown, and Boston as a whole made 22 threes on 51% shooting, that’s almost unbeatable. Rob Williams won his battles under the basket as he collected 4 blocks in just 18 minutes. The game was decided pretty much at halftime, and the Celtics led by 49 points at one moment. I know that there are going to be nights when nothing goes your way, but to get brutally beaten up by 40 points by your biggest rival just 10 days before the playoffs, man that gotta hurt. And if these two meet each other in the eastern conference finals, I’m sure this game will ring inside the back of the heads of the Bucks players.
