St Bernard's Well or Spring was discovered in 1760 and by 1790 a Roman Doric Temple and pump house had been built here for Lord Gardenstone and designed by Alexander Nasmyth who was better known for his famous portrait of Robert Burns. In 1887 the temple was restored by the publisher Wilson Nelson and the statue of Hygiea replaced. The pump house is highly decorative with mosaic tiles, ultramarine colours and gold leaf. The pump house is rarely accessible.
