Our actions have consequences. Even if it takes years for those consequences to be handed down. And we’re going to see that today when we look at 1 Kings 1-2; Psalms 37, 71, 94 But first welcome to Experiencing God 365 Days Through the Bible - Day 149 Today we see a very old and frail David. The scriptures say he is not able to stay warm so as weird as it is, a young virgin is found to lay with him and keep him warm although vs 4 of 1 Kings 1 is clear nothing happened. David’s son Adonijah claims the thrown. David is so out of it he barely realizes his son is about to overthrow him. He says he will make himself King, gets some chariots and 50 men and parades through the town. Joab who until now has been loyal to David, goes along with this and so does Abiathar who supported Absalom. Adonijah throws a party. Nathan and Bathsheba say no no. Nathan tells Bathsheba to go and sit with the King and tell him what’s going on. She does, he promises that Solomon will be king as he had promised. David orders Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah to take Solomon down to Gihon Spring, on David’s mule and anoint him. 1 Kings 1: 38-43 Adonijah’s guest leave his party in panic – they don’t want to be killed – and Adonijah seized the horns of the altar in fear because he was worried King Solomon would kill him. In chapter 2 of 1 Kings David gives final instructions to Solomon. 2 Kings 2:2-4 2 “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. 3 Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. 4 If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’ After this David says Joab killed two of my army commanders .. don’t let him go to the grave in peace. Be kind to the sons of Barzillai – their father took care of me while I was on the run. Shimei cursed me but I swore to the lord I would not kill him .. but you are wise and take care of it. David is buried in the city of David. Solomon establishes his rule. Adonijah has the audacity to ask for Abishag to marry him .. she was the one who was brought in to keep David warm. Solomon has him killed over this – it's very disrespectful. Solomon takes Abiathar’s position from him and tells him to go home and die. Joab is killed beside the altar. Shimei who cursed David was told he could live as long as he didn’t leave Jerusalem .. but he had two slaves run away so he chased them and when he came back he was put to death for not keeping his end of the bargain. Psalm 37 Trust in the Lord! Delight in the Lord! Commit everything to the Lord, don’t be angry, don’t lose your temper, Vs 9 Those who trust in the Lord will possess the land. Vs 11 the lowly will possess the land Vs 22 those the lord blesses will possess the land Vs 34 He will honor you by giving you land vs25 I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging for bread Go with God and He will take care of you! Psalm 71 The psalmist here is old and knows it .. Save me and rescue me Lord – turn your ear to me You are my rock and my fortress – I trust you You are my strength and protection I declare your glory Psalm 94 God let your justice shine forth God is a God of justice and will take care of those who are wicked and bless those who are upright.
