아프간 동부서 규모 5.9 강진…"1천명 이상 사망" A powerful earthquake has hit the eastern part of Afghanistan,... causing thousands of deaths. Our Kim Bo-kyoung is standing by on the line with the latest. Bo-kyoung, do fill us in. Daniel, at 1:24 AM on Wednesday local time,... a massive earthquake hit the eastern part of Afghanistan. It swept the province of Paktika province near the border with Pakistan. The magnitude of the earthquake is 5-point-9, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center,... who've revised its initial estimate of 6-point-1. According to the latest figures from the Bakhtar News Agency, the quake has led to around one-thousand deaths and has left around 15-hundred injured. Unfortunately,... the number of deaths and injuries is expected to rise as more information tickles through from those at the site. The epicenter of the tremor was about 37 kilometers from the city of Khost,... a city near the Pakistani border. Though only 10-kilometers in depth,... the quake was strong enough to be felt across the country,... including the capital Kabul. Authorities have launched a rescue operation,... with helicopters being used to reach the injured. "It was about midnight when the quake struck. It destroyed our neighbors' houses. When we got there, many were dead or wounded. They sent us to the hospital. I also saw many dead bodies." Around a thousand have reportedly died,... but specific numbers by various media outlets differ. Why is that? And how are Afghan authorities handling the crisis? Daniel, like you said,... the exact number is hard to determine as there are lots of regions where the Taliban's administration does not reach,... and many global media outlets have left the country following the Taliban's takeover last year. Interior ministry official, Salahuddin Ayubi, also added that it would take some time to collect more details,... as some of the villages are in remote areas in the mountains. Meanwhile,... the supreme leader of the ruling Taliban has offered his condolences through a statement,... while the Deputy Minister for Disaster Management said the government will be giving out relief funds. "Based on the orders of the prime minister, it has been decided that one-hundred-thousand afghani will be given to the families of people who've died, and fifty-thousand will be given to those who've suffered injuries as urgent support.” A spokesman of Afghanistan's foreign ministry said it would welcome international help too. That's all from me for now, back to you Daniel. #Afghanistan #dead #earthquake 📣 Arirang News(Facebook) : / arirangtvnews 📣 Arirang News(Twitter) : / arirangtvnews 📣 News Center(YouTube) : / newscenter_arirangtv 2022-06-22, 22:00 (KST)
