India’s Deadliest Plane Crash on New Year | Air India AI-855 Tragedy Explained #reels #shorts

On 1 January 1978, New Year’s Day, India witnessed one of its deadliest airplane crashes. Air India Flight AI-855, also known as Emperor Ashoka, took off from Mumbai Airport for Dubai. Just minutes after takeoff, this flight turned into a tragic disaster that killed 213 people. The aircraft climbed to around 8,000 feet when it slowly turned towards the Arabian Sea. During this time, a critical cockpit instrument called the ADI (Attitude Direction Indicator) developed a technical fault. Because of this error, the cockpit instruments showed that the aircraft wings were tilted, even though the plane was actually flying straight. To correct what they believed was a tilt, the pilot Madan Lal Kukar turned the aircraft in the opposite direction. The flight engineer Faria noticed the technical issue and sent a warning message to the cockpit, but the response was delayed. Due to the faulty instrument readings, the pilots lost the correct sense of direction. The aircraft slowly descended at a dangerous 108-degree angle and finally crashed into the Arabian Sea, just 3 kilometers away from Mumbai. All 190 passengers and 23 crew members lost their lives in this heartbreaking accident. At that time, it was considered one of the most dangerous and shocking air disasters in Indian history.
