Step-Back Golf Drill for Instant Power and Better Tempo - John Hughes Golf

Ever wonder when it’s okay to step back in your golf swing? In this video, I introduce the Step Back Drill – a simple golf swing drill that might feel counterintuitive at first, but delivers big results. For golfers who struggle with the traditional step-through drill or weight transfer, stepping back during your backswing can be a game-changer. Starting with your feet together and stepping backward as you swing back makes it easier to coordinate stepping through the shot, improving your swing tempo and helping you use more ground force from the ground for extra power. This drill is fairly easy to perform and doesn’t require much coordination, so golfers of all skill levels can try it. Plus, you can practice it anywhere – no special equipment needed – and it will help you rotate through the shot more smoothly for better contact. How to Do the Step Back Drill: Begin with your feet together and the ball positioned as usual. Hover the club slightly off the ground to stay relaxed. As you start your backswing, step your trail foot (back foot) backward behind you. Then, when you transition into the downswing, step forward through the shot toward your target. This sequence might feel unusual at first, but it encourages a natural weight shift and a full turn through the ball. By stepping back then through, you’ll engage your lower body and use the ground to generate power, leading to a more balanced finish. It’s one of those golf swing drills that can help you develop better rhythm, improve your swing tempo, and increase your consistency. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced golfer, this drill can add some extra distance to your shots and improve your overall coordination.
