KCCA's multi sectoral approach to tackling malnutrition.

KCCA's multi sectoral approach to tackling malnutrition.

While Uganda has made commendable strides in economic growth and poverty reduction, progress in reducing malnutrition has been slower. Chronic undernutrition remains a critical challenge, with approximately one in four children under five years old suffering from stunting. Additionally, the quality of diets for children under two years old remains a pressing concern, with only a fraction receiving the recommended nutrition. In March 2024, KCCA launched a seven-year strategy known as the Kampala Capital City Nutrition Action Plan (KCC-NAP) 2023/2024 - 2029/2030 aimed at reducing the malnutrition burden across the city. KCCA’s nutrition plan is part of its commitment to addressing food and nutrition insecurity, aligning with one of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government Manifesto 2021-2026 deliverables. As Uganda progresses towards its Vision 2040, prioritizing nutrition is seen as a critical step in building a healthier and more prosperous society. Background: Led by the office of the Prime Minister, Uganda held its 3rd National Nutrition Forum (#NNF), under the theme "UNLOCKING NUTRITION’S POTENTIAL: Accelerating Multisectoral Actions and Strategic Investments for Enhanced Nutrition Security". Since 2013, the Government and its partners have been organizing the National Nutrition Forum, which is a platform that brings together all nutrition stakeholders in the country. This forum is the highest level of engagement on nutrition by all stakeholders. Every two and a half years, the forum is convened and presided over by the Right Honourable Prime Minister to assess the implementation of Uganda Nutrition Action Plan. The forum brings together all heads of government departments and agencies, ambassadors, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations, and academia. The forum avails opportunity for local, national and international delegates from across various sectors to come together and consolidate efforts to promote compelling and evidence-based agendas that strengthen the resilience of people in the face of rising economic issues, climate change, food insecurity, among other things and to discuss agendas that unlock the full potential of nutrition for the country's population, especially the children.
