In Calgary, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney discusses the cancellation of the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline project. New U.S. President Joe Biden revoked the permit granted for construction of the pipeline expansion as he signed a number of executive orders on his first day in office. The premier is calling on the Canadian government to impose trade and economic sanctions if the new U.S. administration refuses to meet and review the decision with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. TC Energy Corporation announced a suspension of its work on the project ahead of the expected loss of the permit. The Alberta government announced in 2020 that it was providing the pipeline project with $1.5 billion in equity and a $6-billion loan guarantee. The pipeline is intended to carry bitumen from the province to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico. (January 20, 2021)
