Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] audio conversion of this classic early 60’s rock hit! Written by Del Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook "Runaway" is a #1 Billboard Hot 100 song made famous by Del Shannon in 1961. It was and became a major international hit. It topped the Billboard charts for4 consecutive weeks, and Billboard ranked it as the #5 song for 1961. It was # 472 on the 2010 version of Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and #466 on the 2004 version. Keyboard player Max Crook invented the clavioline-based electric keyboard called a Musitron, which later became "Maximilian". It was one of the 1st uses of a synthesizer-sound for a rock song. "Runaway" was mixed in stereo, but that version left me flat. The drums were weak and too far back. The stereo image was not great. They probably used a 3-track recorder. About the mono mix: The source track is from a 1998 Time/Life Compilation CD “The Rock 'N' Roll Era- Still Rockin'”. I was thrilled that it was in MONO and was a good clean remaster. About my DES mix: For Del’s vocal, I removed most of the original mono reverb and replaced it with a light crisp stereo reverb and raised him 1.2db. For the Rhythm Guitar, I panned it Right reverbing into the Left. For the Piano, I gave it a surround-sound effect panned slightly Left. For the Musitron, I panned it Left, reverbing into the Right. For the Drums, I panned them Right, reverbing into the Left. I used a slight limiter to brighten them up, raised them 1.5db and uncompressed the low-end for extra punch. For the Bass, I left it centered with no further adjustments. Technical Information: I used DeMIX PRO v5.2.0 to isolate Del’s Lead Vocal, Electric Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Musitron. Drums and Bass into 6 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayers PRO-7 for stem cleanup. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, EQ, Delay, Reverb and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
