UPDATE: Officer-Involved in Fatal Shooting

DAYTON -- Authorities will hold a press conference today releasing more details in an officer-involved shooting in Dayton A Dayton officer is now on paid administrative leave after the he shot and killed a suspect that led officers on a chase through the city, which ended on Homewood Avenue. Police have not released much information. Dayton police tell us they tried to pull over a 26-year-old man who was wanted for a felony. Instead of pulling over, the man sped off and crashed into a parked car. After the crash he ran into the woods. The chief says when two officers caught up with the man, the suspect pulled out a gun, causing one officer to shoot the 26-year-old multiple times, killing him. Police are now investigating whether the shooting was warranted. Right now, police are not releasing the name of the 26-year-old or how many times he was shot. Previous coverage: DAYTON -- A chase has ended with Dayton Police fatally shooting a suspect. It happened around 6 p.m. Monday in a wooded area off Homewood Avenue in Dayton. Police are releasing little information, but we do know a special task force was searching for the suspect Monday afternoon because he was wanted for a felony crime. But when authorities tried to pull him over, everything quickly escalated. Just about every police officer in Dayton swarmed the Five Oaks neighborhood after Dayton police say an officer was involved in a shooting. Mike and Kathe Weincauf live just blocks away from the crime scene. They were on their way to church when it happened. "We had to go around the block to go to church, and we wondered what was going on," Mike said. "I just expected him to be wounded. I don't know why it was a surprise that he died, but it really was," said Kathe. Dayton police say they were searching for the 26-year-old suspect. But when an officer tried to pull him over, he sped off, crashing into a parked car before running away into nearby woods. Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl says two officers were able to catch up with the suspect, which is when he pulled out a gun, causing one officer to shoot at the suspect several times, killing him instantly. "I can tell you if an individual is wanted for a felony and produces a firearm, that certainly raises the situation where deadly force may be used," Biehl said. Police are now investigating whether the shooting was warranted. In the meantime, the officer involved will be placed on paid administrative leave. "We take it very seriously. We take it very seriously when officers use deadly force, and our job is to investigate that to determine exactly what happened and determine whether the use of force was appropriate," said Biehl. Police aren't identifying the suspect right now, nor will they say what initial crime put him on their radar. Earlier coverage: DAYTON -- The SOFAST Task Force was searching for a suspect, whose identity remains unknown at this time, when they spotted him in a vehicle and tried to pull him over. The suspect then fled the scene and crashed into a parked car before running into the woods. Two Dayton officers followed him and found him in the wooded area. The suspect displayed a gun, which prompted one of the officers to shoot him. The suspect's injuries were fatal. The officer who fired shots will be placed on paid administrative leave. The Dayton Police Department will be holding a press conference Tuesday morning to provide more information. Earlier coverage: DAYTON -- According to scanner traffic, there has been an officer-involved shooting. The scanners indicate police were trying to make an arrest on Homewood Avenue and Forrest Avenue when shots were fired. No officers were injured. The suspect has been injured, but the extent of those injuries is unknown at this time. We have crews near the scene and will update you as more information becomes available.
