Explained: Are New COVID-19 Mutations More Dangerous?| BOOM | Govindraj Ethiraj, Dr Jeremy Kamil

The number of COVID-19 cases in India is now at the highest per day in any country in the world. The Indian variant has also been discovered in the UK. Is the new virus mutation more dangerous? Is it resistant to treatments and vaccines? BOOM Explains. Dr Jeremy Kamil, Virologist, LSUHS Shreveport, says that UK's travel ban is discriminatory against India. The B117 originated in Britain but they didn't ban travelling from England to India at the time. We are going to keep finding new variants but all of them can be controlled by the current vaccines. There is nothing spectacularly concerning about this - the current wave can largely be attributed to human behaviour. India is a populous country and relaxing of norms, reduced wearing of masks has contributed in a big way to rise in cases. He also says that the current B.1617 is not the scariest variant yet, but it is the most interesting variant for scientific research. It is still COVID-19 - don't freak out, calm down and get the vaccine. The virus will always change little by change but it cannot change itself completely to outsmart all vaccines and our immune system. At this point, it is the same virus from December 2019 in Wuhan, China, with probably a fake moustache on and a wig. Watch BOOM's Govindraj Ethiraj speak with Dr Jeremy Kamil on how virus mutations aren't too dangerous, human behaviour driving rise in COVID-19 cases in India and how vaccines can protect even against COVID-19 mutations.
