Dr. Shabir Ally explains that scholars of #Islam have interpreted Quran 33:40 which reads, in part, “he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of Prophets,” to convey that there will not be another #prophet or #religion to come after Islam. The word “last” in the verse literally means “stamp.” A stamp in ancient times was used to place a seal on a letter with wax, which implies closure or finality; the understanding, then, is that Prophet #Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the seal closing a long line of prophecy in human history. We can find additional support for this understanding in several different #hadith, one in which the Prophet says, “There is no prophet after me.” New questions arise, however, as Muslims ponder the growth of religions that have come after Islam, such as #Sikhism or the #BahaiFaith. How should Muslims respond in an age of #pluralism and mutual understanding? How should Muslims regard people who sincerely follow other faiths, and what is God’s plan for others after the coming of Islam?
