Home Tour 2021 | 5-Room HDB | Contemporary Minimalist

This video is a tour of our second home, a 5 year old resale HDB apartment, we moved into in July 2019 and like our first home, was fully designed by ourselves. Having adopted a Industrial-Scandinavian theme for our first home, a 4-room HDB apartment, in 2014, we were looking for something a little different this time and we settled on a Contemporary-Minimalist (we try) concept. One of the main reasons we decided on a larger HDB apartment versus an EC was the significant space difference as we enjoy hosting our families and friends over meals. Naturally, one of the design considerations was to maximise the living room area for group hosting and it was this thinking that led to the open concept kitchen and study. In addition to the open concept kitchen, we also wanted a kitchen island and still be able to enclose the kitchen during heavy cooking if necessary. This proved to be the greatest design challenge, it took some time before we arrived at the kitchen island counter with a single fixed glass panel along with bi-fold glass windows and doors and we consider having 2 entry points to the kitchen as a unique factor. In terms of the colour palette, we went for a timeless (hopefully) combination of grey hues and walnut woodgrains as the primary colours with black and white as the secondary ones. This meant restricting ourselves to 2 laminates and selecting other complementary surface materials such as vinyl flooring, tiles in grey and black; and furniture in solid walnut or brown leather. Just like our first home, a full-size study is again part of the design considerations and it proved to be more than useful when Covid-19 stuck. Lastly, the bedroom is kept simple and minimalistic as we always treat it as a space solely reserved for rest and sleep.
