Kitwanga River Salmon Enumeration Facility

Since time immemorial, Gitanyow Nation managed our salmon with fish weirs, but in 1917, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) ordered its removal. Shortly afterwards, the sockeye population crashed from tens of thousands to only hundreds, with the majority of the decline from over-fishing and clear-cut logging. As a result, Gitanyow voluntarily closed its sockeye harvest in the 1970s to prevent the extinction of this critical run.
