For more information or to work 1-1 with me check out Happinestbirth.com Hannah Gray New York + Global Lactation ~ HypnoBirthing Educator ~ CPM in training ~ birth doula ~ postpartum specialist ---- 0:14 We call it the 4th trimester because- as it's the first 3 months after the baby is born, similar to the first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and now 4th. 0:25 Um, this is a part 1 of a 4 part series, and so I hope you stick around for the rest of them. 0:33 As we know, postpartum is forever, we're going to get into what postpartum is, portals to think about, portals of support, better said to think about, and then as you identify- apps or, umm, you know, opportunities to help yourself, umm, this is going to list out different ways you can work with myself 0:52 or other doulas in your area. So what, It is postpartum. It really is just this time period referring to after a baby is born. 1:02 It's the state that the mother is in. And you are in that state forever. You're always post-birth, right? It is forever. 1:10 But I wanted to clarify that this is not synonymous. It is postpartum depression. We do not shorten that terminology. We're going to get into a little bit more about what that is. 1:21 One thing that's really amazing to consider is the story of lobsters. When female lobsters want to meet, they choose someone who looks really umm, tough and has the ability to protect them. 1:38 This is because when they give birth they have to, or when they receive eggs, they have to shed their entire exoskeleton. 1:44 In order to do so. Now, after they receive the eggs from the male, they're going to be in a state of recovery, right? 1:55 So they're going to slowly build back their exoskeleton over the course of about two, two weeks. And you can imagine if they did not have a good, uhm, support system, i.e. 2:08 this partner that they chose. Um, for humans, maybe, you can see where I'm going. Uh, if you do not feel safe, cared for, protected in this really delicate time. 2:21 And, you know, you're quite vulnerable to illnesses, bad energy. Uhm, you know, having bad nutrition leads to bad healing. And so as is loud. 2:33 The lobster is now recovering for the next two weeks. Uhm, you know, that exoskeleton protected a very soft inner tissue. 2:41 And then once that is completed, she's going to go off and live her life, right? And so consider your fourth trimester 2:49 As this really delicate space of time, in which you do not have that exoskeleton of protection. A lot of times when people visit you, who are in this postpartum space, the first question is how the baby is. 3:05 What's the baby need? How's the baby doing? But you two are really fresh, delicate, albeit resilient, but remember that hard exoskeleton of protection. 3:17 It's no longer there. Umm, your emotions may feel closer to the surface. It's harder to mask when, you know, you've walked too long or you've held too much space. 3:30 And so prioritizing this healing. And having a mental state of curiosity, an early postpartum, we actually set up a really strong foundation for the next 50 or 40, rolls up the tongue better, 40 years of postpartum. 3:46 So what you're doing is really laying the ground work. For yourself, in the years to come. Alright, so the needs of human, you know, it's really written, uhm, within our- within our bones, right? 4:03 As you can- as you look around to these, uhm, different terms, you know, community, active joy, healing, kin keeper, family, family space keeper, nourishment, uhm, maybe someone's- Come on. 4:17 Uh, blocking those visitors that want to pile in. You can consider which- which of these are really standing out to you that you want to prioritize and make sure is, you know, on the forefront for yourself. 4:33 Your personal needs are going to vary. Uhm, but in general, over, you know, what all women need after childbirth. Uhm, good nutrition. 4:44 People, right, support. Family. Uhm. Lactation, support, et cetera. Those are pretty much the same. It does sometimes come down to your own mindset for how those things feel on your, on your well-being, right? 5:03 So take a moment here. Uhm. That we're going to consider this wheel of postpartum needs, borrowing from ancient, or bird song, a really great company, um, here in Brooklyn. 5:14 Let's just take a moment and consider what is going to be your own priority in postpartum, where you all- You already feel that you might be lacking.
