Exhaust Leak In Cars: 5 Top Warning Signs To Look Out For. In this video I will talk about exhaust leak in cars. An exhaust leak means that there is a crack or hole in the exhaust system, which allows harmful exhaust gases to escape before reaching the tailpipe. It usually results from: Corrosion - moisture and road salt can rust the exhaust system, resulting in a leak. Physical damage - debris, scrapes, and impacts can crack the exhaust system, causing a leak. Worn gaskets - gaskets in the exhaust system may wear out with age, causing a leak. What are the symptoms of an exhaust leak? A loud engine noise Most vehicles have mufflers near the tailpipe to reduce engine noise. If the leak or breach occurs before the muffler, you may experience unusually loud groans, whistles, or other noises during acceleration. The noise intensity increases if there's significant damage to the exhaust system. Strange noises from the exhaust You may also hear clicking or tapping when driving or cold-starting an engine. These usually result from an exhaust manifold leak. The sounds may stop once your engine heats up and the manifold expands. Excessive vibrations Escaping exhaust fumes may create rattles and vibrations felt through the gas pedal, floorboards, or steering wheel. The vibrations worsen as you accelerate since more fumes move through the system. Eventually, you'll feel the vibrations throughout the cabin. Strong odors Exhaust fumes leaking into your cabin emit a burning or gasoline smell. You may also get a rotten egg smell, indicating a failed catalytic converter. If you notice these odors, exit the vehicle immediately and call your mechanic. A Check Engine light Modern exhaust systems rely on sensors. When these sensors detect a leak or collect unusual data, they communicate with the powertrain control module, which triggers the check engine light. If you notice a blinking check engine light, stop driving immediately and contact roadside assistance or a mechanic. However, if it's a steady light, have a mechanic inspect your car.
