Making His Case: The Art of Persuading the Public | Carrie Severino

Carrie Severino, Chief Counsel and Policy director at the Judicial Crisis Network, gave a speech at Utah Valley University during the 2016 Constitution Week Conference hosted by the Center for Constitutional Studies. Severino challenges many of the speakers at the conference by using Antonin Scalia's own quote, "a man who has made no enemies is probably not a good man." She implies that his infamy is proof that he did his job well. As Severino continues, she describes Scalia as a man who tried to make sure the Court's system of judging didn't open the door to subjectivism, but kept an objective standard. Scalia stayed true to the law when he voted in the Court, even if he didn't like the outcomes of the case, and he diverged from the purposism perspective that many justices had. Severino concludes her speech by stating that Scalia never intended to be popular, but he did intend to do his job the right way.
