CHINA: BEIJING: US SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE ALBRIGHT VISIT (2)

(30 Apr 1998) English/Nat U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright capped Thursday's visit to Beijing with a speech at the Judicial Training Centre. During her visit, Albright called for continued co-operation between the United States and China on legal issues. U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was in China on Thursday making preparations for Clinton's state visit in June. After her meetings earlier with Chinese leaders, Albright visited the American embassy in Beijing for round table discussions with Chinese delegates. She followed that with a visit to the Chinese Judicial Training Centre and met Zhu Ming Shan, Deputy President of the Supreme Court of China. The meeting gave Albright a chance to discuss the legal system as it related to human rights. Albright has voiced concern about China's record on freedom of speech and the imprisonment of dissidents. During a speech at the Judicial Training Centre, she called for enhanced co-operation between the U-S and China on legal issues. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In addition at their summit meeting last October President Jiang and President Clinton agreed to launch a new initiative to co-operate in the field of law and this initiative is in both countries interests and I know that the legal communities in both countries are enthusiastic about it." SUPER CAPTION: Madeleine Albright, U-S Secretary of State Albright said that one of the main starting points should be in exchanges between Chinese and American judges. SOUNDBITE: (English) "An important part of this initiative is to encourage exchanges and other forms of co-operation among judges in our two nations and I hope that your institution will be a partner in these activities. And none is more important than co-operation in the field of law. I encourage each of you in your studies and in your legal careers and I hope that our two countries will come closer together as we work with each other on matter related to the rule of law."
