For information on joining the Sparrows, please contact [email protected]. Our Cantata Stabat Mater is a poem from the 13th century that was popular at the time of Pergolesi's birth in Italy in 1710. Other composers had created music for it and Pergolesi wrote his version as he was dying from tuberculosis at the age of 26 - it was his last, and most famous, work. The title comes from the first line of the poem: 'The Mother stood'. The first six movements describe Mary's experience of Christ's crucifixion. The final six movement then describe a response to her experience and the significance of Christ's death. He came to Canada in 1984 and studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) under John Barnum. In 1996, he founded the Sacred Music Society, with a special focus on The Sparrows Choir School with the goal of training children as young as four to sing and appreciate the beauty of sacred music. In addition to directing the Ottawa Sparrows and Amaryllis Women's Choir, Mr. Lieflander is currently the head of the music department at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom (Barry's Bay), music director of the Martin Luther German Evangelical Lutheran Church (Ottawa), and music instructor at St. Timothy's Classical Academy (Ottawa). He is a former professor of Augustine College (Ottawa).
