Alright then, name the hard rock band that over the past 20 years has created the most awesome and consistently kick ass hard rock guitar riffs. is it Acdc? Metallica? Green Day? Megadeth, Red hot chili peppers? the foo fighters? Iron Maiden? the answer is none of the above. the answer is the darkness. the most misunderstood rock band in the world over the past twenty years. now then, call them what you like, but just don't call the darkness a joke band, because that's most definitely what they're not, and a moniker the boys in the darkness have been fighting since they first exploded onto the music scene way back in 2003. while it's certainly true that they absolutely love instilling a lot of good humor, fun and silliness into their lyrics and videos, they most definitely take their music very very seriously. they just don't take themselves too seriously. that's wholly intentional and to be commended. ya see, it was Justin Hawkins and the boys ascertation, that far too many rock and metal bands had, and were, taking themselves far far too seriously within the genre, especially nu-metal in the early 2000's, and that any notion of fun and having a good time had been castrated from Rock and hard rock music. they aimed to bring fun back into rock and roll, by paying homage and tribute to their classic rock idols of the seventies, bands like Queen Acdc, Aerosmith, Van Halen and thin Lizzy, and wear that image firmly on their sleeves. all bands that for the most part instilled no small amount of fun and kitch into their music and image when they were at their peaks. the darkness just happened to do it 20 to 25 years later, smack dab in the middle of nu metals angry, bleak and awful self importance phase. the darkness were a real and much needed breath of fresh air and their initial massive success in the early 2000's proved as much. now upon first glance, hell, upon multiple glances, the whole darkness thing, very well may come off looking like a bunch of guys just having a laugh and taking the piss, as the Brits like to say. aka, a joke band. all except for one thing. they're really fucking good. like really good. like crazy good musically. This is a band with way more substance over style, though at first glance it may not appear that way, because their style is so outrageous. now if your one of those, who feel that it's their image that's putting you off, just strip all that away, don't watch the videos, or concentrate too hard on the lyrics. just listen. listen to the music on the albums. it is seriously some of the best guitar driven hard rock to come out in the past twenty years. and of course, with guitar driven hard rock, comes guitar riffs, and boy oh boy, is this where Justin and Dan Hawkins shine. especially Dan who composes most of the band's riffs he's an absolute riff machine of the highest caliber. and today we're gonna play through ten of my favorites and what I consider the ten Best darkness riffs. so then, if you're ready, gimme a D.... gimme an Arkness! let's do this.
