My testing of MicBergsma post: "Hero4 Black - 4K scaled to 1080 vs 1080 Sharpness Comparison - GoPro Tip #390" It is unclear in MicBergsma video how each step was done, making many believe the 4K/UHD wasn't scaled first. I used the free GoPro Studio 2.5 so anyone with HERO3/3+ Black, HERO4 Silver or Black can try this for themselves. Step 1: Captured 1080p24 and 4Kp24 (both non-Protune) -- use 4Kp15 if your camera only has that. Step 2: Open GoPro Studio and select Advanced Settings to scale everything to 1920x1080 (before editing.) Step 3: Convert both the 1080p24 and 4Kp24 clips to 1080p CineForm files at High quality. Step 4: Convert the 4K clip again without scale (for comparison) by turning off the scale in Advanced Settings. Step 5: Open the edit panel. Placed all three clips in the storyboard, then again for the zoomed versions, for a total of six storyboard clips. Step 6: Increase the sharpness of the 4K scaled clip to 0.5 -- the camera performs a visual sharpening (non-Protune) which will be lost during the downscale, so this is only to normalize the apparence. Sharpness doesn't add detail. Step 7: The last three clips, set the Zoom to maximum (which is 400% in GoPro Studio 2.5.) Step 8 (optional): Add titles is you like. Step 9: Export as "HD 1080p" You will likely find what I did. UHD/4K downscaled has more information than in camera 1080p, and of course 4K without a scale is best.
