Filmed in the forest of Botanik Lake Houses, on the shore of Lake Karacaoren in southwestern Turkiye, as spring's first green leaves open. 🌳 The young ones step out of the hollow: a distant rooster's crow or the call of the jays startles them and they dash back inside, but curiosity wins over fear, and they come out again to play and explore the world around them. Larger squirrels foraging along the branches, and jays that visit the tree, share the same old oak's table. Only the sound of the wind, the leaves, the birds and a distant rooster. 🐿️ The residents The squirrels here are the Anatolian (Caucasian) squirrel, Sciurus anomalus. Unlike the northern red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), it has a grizzled grey back with orange on the ears, face and tail; it is the native squirrel of most of Anatolia. It does not hibernate and is active year-round, feeding on acorns, seeds and buds, and caching food in tree hollows and in the ground. The caches it fails to recover help the forest renew itself. 🐦 The blue-winged birds coming and going are Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius). In autumn, jays gather and bury thousands of acorns; the ones they forget sprout into new trees. So this single tree tells a whole cycle: the oak feeds both the squirrel and the jay, and the jay in turn plants new oaks. And a hollow like this, where the young nest, forms only in old, mature oaks, making this tree both their shelter and their table. 🌲 More than 70 bird species have been recorded around this lake on the migration routes, and right nearby lie the rare Anatolian sweetgum (sigla) forests, found in only two places on Earth.
