Battle continues for Yemeni port city of Hodeidah

(11 Oct 2018) The battle for the key Yemeni port city of Hodeidah continued on Thursday between the Yemeni fighters loyal to Yemen's exiled government and Houthi rebels. The Saudi-led coalition has launched several air strikes against Houthi positions in Hodeidah in the past few days to help pro-government fighters advance. Meanwhile tens of thousands of residents have fled the fighting along Yemen's western coastline where Yemeni fighters backed by a Saudi-led coalition are engaged in fierce battles with Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. Yemen has been locked in a ruinous war pitting the Saudi-led coalition backing the government of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi against the Houthis since March 2015. Saudi-led air strikes have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties and killed thousands of Yemeni civilians. The Houthis have fired long-range missiles into Saudi Arabia and targeted vessels in the Red Sea. At least 10,000 people have been killed in Yemen's conflict, which has exacerbated what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis. A Saudi-led coalition has been battling Iran-allied Shiite rebels known as Houthis since 2015 in a stalemated war that has killed more than 10,000 people.
