Christians are often told that their Bible is corrupted due to textual variants and that their essential doctrines (Trinity, Deity of Christ, Atonement etc.) cannot be trusted. Dr. Bart Ehrman, renown NT scholar and prominent agnostic contends that none of the essential Christian doctrines are at stake due to textual variants. He adds that since Christians don't base essential doctrines on one single verse/word, the variants have ZERO bearing on essential doctrines. He concludes that whether or not the Bible teaches an essential doctrine, it cannot be proven or disproven simply on the basis of the textual variants or the Bible itself for that matter.
