Fishing for BIG Speckled Trout with Live Croaker | Baffin Bay, Texas

Fishing for big trophy trout in Baffin Bay using croakers. Today on the Wide Open I put the boat in at bird island Texas and headed south of rod bending action. Baffin Bay is infamous, no, notorious for bigger fish. It’s also well known for the rocks. The rocks that can take out your lower unit and make a hole in the side of your boat. So if you choose to aim your boat south of bird island, better realize big fish are waiting but so are the rocks. These rocks are prehistoric worms created by molten rock being pushed up by the crust of the earth. Don’t hold me to that - that may be an old wise tail. But nonetheless, these big fish hold bait fish. They don't look like a rock. They have a lot of algae on them - some of the algae is orange. But I'll tell you this, the bait fish love em. The rocks have a lot of nooks and crannies for the bait fish for them to hide. And that draws in big game fish. Baffin Bay is known for big trout and big redfish. These are the smart fish. They’re there for a reason. Shelter and a food source. But if you think you’re gonna catch fish in baffin bay, you gotta stay away from the rocks, you are not gonna catch those bigger fish. So you have to take a little risk to fish baffin bay. Some people won’t go there. I actually had some friends and fishing guides to show me the water. And use a GPS to map some safe routes. But if you’ve ever navigated shallow water using a GPS you’ll realize right away it’s almost impossible to stay on track from waypoint to waypoint. You’ll be a little off from time to time, even on a safe route there’s still a chance you could hit one of these rocks with your boat. So if you’re heading into the badlands, where I've caught my biggest trout or Caprita Pass, tide gauge, the meadows, or 9mi hole you’re taking some risk. I fished with croaker on this episode but lures would be just about as effective out there. I caught some great trout. You know I'll be back.
