Mid pan of demo STORYLINE Supporters of president Bashar al-Assad gathered on Sunday in front of the Russian embassy to express their support for Vladimir Putin, as Russians went to the polls to choose their next president. Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, is expected to easily win the Sunday election against four challengers. The crowd carried Russian flags and placards with Putin's face to express their appreciation of the Russian leadership's support for Assad. As international pressure against Assad's regime has grown, Russia has protected it from censure in the UN Security Council along with China.
