Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls – Solo Black Mage Run (2024 Fall of Chaos Event Video #4)

During this run I made it to the Chaos Shrine, using only a single black mage. You will note that the other white mages, ironically named “Dead”, are deceased and shown to have no experience points generated at all. This was accomplished during the first battle of the game where I let the Goblins kill off everyone except the black mage. In general things are much easier in the Dawn of Souls remake since you now have access to better restoratives other than simply 99 potions. Luckily this game allows you to sidestep the cursed Slowra spell with Hermes’ shoes which can be obtained through the puzzle mini game before you have access to the optional dungeons. You will note that the black mage can learn the haste spell which allows me to skip the mini game for a pair of Hermes’ shoes. In additional your characters can level up to 99 instead of 50 which allows more stat increases during the adventure. The fiends have a much greater amount of hit points in this version. I begin this video right outside the entrance to the Chaos Shrine to begin the long, one–way trip down to Chaos. My black mage is at level 51 to start the final league of the adventure. I have found that besides the revived fiends themselves the make or break it portion of this run is found on the first, upper levels of the shrine, before you reach the Lich Fiend. Here it is trial by fire as you encounter groups of dragons that will beat the tar out of character. Since Dawn of Souls went to MP instead of a set amount of spell level usage, I found it easier to use your magic against foes in the shrine. The Black mage has access to all three of the level three elemental spells. These spells will be your primary offense in random battles instead of the mythril knife, so it helps to know your enemies’ weaknesses. Additionally, we can stockpile magic restoratives, like ethers, making a mage a more viable option for a solo run. Because of the abundance of items, I did not have top abuse the cheap health regeneration cycle like I did during the other versions of the game and could progress faster through the Chaos Shrine. For those not familiar with my other “Fall of Chaos” video the cheap health regeneration you kill off all the enemies in a random encounter except the last one. Then use the defender sword about three to four times to repeatedly cast “Blink” on the solo character. Now that the character cannot be touched, except by a lucky hit, abuse the healing staff until the hit points return to a decent level. Continuing down through the floors you will find that most fiends are dealt with in the exact same way. I begin by using the defender three to four times to defend against any physical attacks, then use the giant’s gloves to increase my attacking power with the Saber spell, and finally cast Haste on myself before attacking. You can skip directly to the giants gloves then haste for the Lich fight because his attacks are mainly magical anyway. Once this has been completed, I basically attack the enemy with the black mage’s mythril knife until they fall. On Tiamat’s floor I take the detour to get the Masamune sword for the final engagement with Chaos one floor below me. After dealing with Tiamat, I utilize the potions and some ethers before my confrontation with Chaos to ensure I have the best chance. At this point in the game my black mage was leveled up to 72 adding a little more strength to your sword attacks, making the Masamune a bit more effective. Chaos has a high amount of defense and has a ridiculous 20,000 HP on this version of the game. The idea here is to start using defender so that you have a good four to six “Blink” spells to defend against his occasional physical attacks. Chaos’s spells are something that you really can’t defend against, so I let the equipped ribbon handle any really bad spells and just weather the damage as I go. After my physical defense has been increased, the next stage of the battle becomes the giant gloves. These will allow you to boost your character’s attack with “Saber” each round. I think I usually wind up boosting my attack with the gloves for a good six times or more since the effects are cumulative and his defense is very high and then caste haste for good measure to double my attacks. Just remember it’s okay to break to cure up since you have a X-potion, Elixir, and/or Megalixir in your possession. Also, if Slowra lands cast haste to return to normal. A good point to check your progress is when Chaos casts “Curaja” on himself. Once he does this go ahead and start attacking him. My black mage was attacking 18 times landing at least around 2,600 to 3,100 damage with each attack on Chaos. After Chaos falls, I let the ending play through along with the credits.
