The West Pier Lighthouse was completed in 1839 and the North Pier in 1841. They have both been recently restored. Whitehaven was developed by the Lowther family during the Georgian period to service the shipping and mining industries. The area had rich coal and iron ore deposits and some coal mines extended several miles under the sea bed. Whitehaven was the last place in Britain to be attacked by America during the American War of Independence and Mildred Warner Gale, George Washington’s grandmother, lived and died in Whitehaven.
