This video shows piles for piers 10 and 11 being driven at the Winona Bridge project. The piles (hollow steel poles) are open-ended on the bottom and have a “cutting shoe” welded on to protect the end of the pipe. Using a diesel-fueled Delmag 125-32 hammer, the piles are driven into the soil until they reach bedrock, which typically takes about an hour to an hour and ten minutes. These 42-inch piles (width) are 80 feet long. Once the piles are driven to bedrock, they are cleaned out and a short rebar cage is placed at the top and partially filled with concrete. Thank you to Mark Grzybowski, Senior Construction Manager with Stantec, for providing this information.
