Diary of a Mad Mexican Woman

Diary of a Mad Mexican Woman

I chose to creatively respond to A Raisin in the Sun by making a video. My video primarily addresses Beneatha and her desire to express her African roots. Through the display of Beneatha's natural hair she reveals her true identity rather than assimilating to society and keeping her straight hair. A video was a perfect way of responding to the play because it visually brings to life Beneatha's belief of her hair being her identifier, personally and culturally. However, in a different way, considering I displayed my own perspective on physical appearance and whether or not it identifies who you are and if you assimilate to society or not. My version includes me as a student who believes they have to elaborately dress similar to women from my culture to represent who and where I come from. After listening to a song that alters my mindset, I realize that it is not necessary because I can still identify with my cultural group in other ways while since not conforming to society. Ways of identifying with a cultural group can be internal rather than external, while still maintaining the same sense of pride.
