The Devotions - Chattanooga Choo Choo (Rare Aussie Leedon 45 - 1989)

Throughout the rock & roll and beat eras, there was probably no Australian record label more famous than Leedon. When it was created in the late fifties, by American/Aussie entrepeneur, Lee Gordon, it largely issued American artists...the earliest Australian hits by Duane Eddy and Jimmie Rodgers were released on Leedon, as was Jody Reynolds' classic "Endless Sleep". Soon after, though, the label became an outlet for Aussie rock & roll talent...the likes of Johnny O'Keefe, Lonnie Lee...and, through the beat era, Ray Brown & The Whispers. The label was thought to have been finished when it released it's final 45...a reissue of J.O'K's "She's My Baby" in 1969. You can imagine my suprise then, when, two decades later, THIS record came across my desk...a Leedon 45 by Aussie band "The Devotions". And, to make it even more intriguing, it was released by EMI and not Festival, who had owned the Leedon label through the 60's. This 45 was released in 1989 on Leedon LD 2318. The band hailed from Sydney...and, somewhere in the back of my mind, I seem to recall seeing them doing this on Channel 9's "Midday Show". The single sank without trace, and is now one of those cool Aussie rock oddities. I still don't know the story behind the brief revival of this classic label. From my memory, this is the only single EMI released with the Leedon imprint...but, I could be wrong on the count and would be happy to be corrected.
