Woodturning: Rough Turning A Bowl From Green Wood. The Branchy Birch Bowl

Woodturning: Rough Turning A Bowl From Green Wood. The Branchy Birch Bowl This blank had a bunch of branch scars on it, which is making for some nice figure but it did make it more difficult to cut. I picked up a small load of yellow and paper birch a couple of weeks ago and am still processing them for the kiln. The trees had been cut about 3 weeks before I picked them up and they are super wet - I haven’t turned anything this green before and it is a lot of fun but it makes a big mess! I’ve got stripes in front of and behind the lathe from the spray and had to stop and wipe my face shield off a couple of times during the roughing process 😂 It also gave me fits because it was warping as I was turning it and I went back and tried to re-true it, but that was basically an exercise in futility. I have 18 bowl blanks in my DIY dishwasher kiln at the moment. I rough turned them and coated the end grain in AnchorSeal. I have the target humidity set at 70% and will reduce that slowly over the next several weeks. I imagine this load will take a lot longer to dry than the first butternut bowls I did, as I only had 6 butternut bowls in that first batch and the butternut tree had been down for a couple of months before I picked it up. I numbered and weighed all the bowls before I sealed them and put them in the kiln so I will check on them occasionally and see how they’re doing. This video is the first attempt at a sort of hybrid approach, using both real time video as well as footage sped up 600%, which is my normal format.
