Resolving Energy Storage Crisis – Flywheel Energy Storage Systems With the elevation of human population together with the development of modern technologies, energy demand is growing significantly. Energy storage systems (ESS) play a crucial role in improving the efficiency of energy supply system when there are imbalances between supply and demand. Energy can be stored in the form of chemical, magnetic, electrochemical, mechanical, and thermal energy. Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) stored electrical energy in the form of rotational kinetic energy based on rotating mass principle with minimum frictional losses. When the energy is required, the motor functions as generator drives the flywheel to rotate at a high speed uses the inertia of the rotational mass to generate energy. While, excess electrical energy is used to power the motor to rotate leads to storage of energy. FESSs with the main characteristics of low installation costs, high energy efficiency, high-power density, high energy density, and high storage capabilities. Moreover, FESSs have long calendar life, fast response, high charge and discharge rates, high availability, and low capacity degradation. FESSs have low maintenance and small area requirements. Moreover, FESSs has negligible environment impact as it does not pose air emissions or pollution concerns. FESSs are completely recyclable and do not contain hazardous or toxic substances. Possible safety hazard such as flying fragments of breaking rotor, explosion, and thermal burns. The flywheel system can be installed underground where a thick steel housing can provide a first protection and a second barrier is provide by the underground installation to avoid the contingencies from happening.
