I'm happy to finally share with you some of the techniques, accessories, and tips I use daily to create buttery smooth cinematic GoPro footage. In this tutorial we'll be covering my current GoPro setup I use almost daily, all of the GoPro settings I currently use, and finally some basic editing techniques in Adobe Premiere Pro. In this tutorial, we'll be covering three main areas that are essential to making your GoPro footage more cinematic. The beginning of the tutorial will cover additional and necessary hardware that will both enhance and help make your footage more immersive for your viewer. Next, we cover the GoPro settings that will allow you to utilize your GoPro to the fullest especially when using ND filters. Finally, we open up Adobe Premiere Pro to cover some basic editing techniques like motion tracking. Hardware GoPros are very capable and well-rounded cameras, however, due to their small form factor, it's just not possible to fit all the necessary hardware inside. The most important accessory in my opinion is an ND Filter followed closely by a good external microphone. What is an ND Filter? An ND or Neutral Density filter is essentially a tinted piece of glass that reduces the amount of light the camera is exposed to. Think of them as sunglasses or goggles for your GoPro. By reducing the amount of light the camera is exposed to, it allows the camera shutter to be manually set to a slower rate creating more natural movements and motion blur. ND Filters come in various tints however the most popular for GoPros, Action Cameras, and Drones tend to be ND8, ND16, ND32, and ND64. I use the Polar Pro ND filters made for the GoPro Hero 9 and Hero 10 currently - https://amzn.to/35KAuu7 The numbers represent what fraction of light is being allowed to pass through the filter. For instance, an ND8 filter allows 1/8th of light to pass through, while an ND32 allows 1/32nd of light to pass through. Why slow the shutter speed down? We want to slow the shutter speed down in order to get more natural-looking movement as well as some motion blur in our shots. This makes for better-looking and more cinematic action shots. Why are microphones important? Personally, I think the majority of aspiring filmers really miss the mark when it comes to good audio. Audio can truly make or break your footage and remove the viewer's engagement. No one likes to listen to windy footage with high frequencies, it's simply just not enjoyable. Sounds are meant to be complementary, not derogatory. Investing in a good directional mic will take your footage to the next level. I recommend the Rode Videomic Pro+ or Rode Videomic Go. They both do a great job paired with a good windscreen (aka deadcat), have a small form factor, and ultimately are both very affordable. By using ProTune settings within your GoPro, you're truly able to unlock you're GoPro's full potential right out of the box. These settings apply to nearly all GoPro's including the GoPro Hero 8, or Hero 9. My Current GoPro Settings for most sunny days: 4K 4:3 60 FPS Lens: Wide Frame Rate: 1/240 Color Profile: Flat Sharpness: Low Bitrate: High White Balance: 5000k Hypersmooth: Boost Obviously, these settings change based on lighting conditions or what subject I'm filming, however, understanding these settings will help you grow into a better filmmaker.
