West Riding Ensemble founder David Milsom and his tutee Maria Nikolaeva play Bach's iconic double concerto in the manner of 19th- or early 20th-century performance. Piano accompaniment substitutes for the orchestra, as was often the case in early studio recordings. 19th-century appropriate gut strings are used, along with a late 19th-century Broadwood boudoir grand piano. This performance also features a rarely played cadenza by Joseph Hellmesberger Sr, inspired by the 1928 recording of Arnold Rosé (then concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra) and his daughter Alma. 00:00 Vivace 04:17 Largo ma non tanto 11:06 Allegro 15:41 [cadenza] Violin I: Maria Nikolaeva Violin II: David Milsom (https://www.davidmilsom.com) Piano: Jonathan Gooing Recorded 9 March 2024 in St Paul's Hall, University of Huddersfield, UK.
