Hundreds gather for anti-government protest

Security officials on duty STORYLINE: Several hundred ethnic Albanians from a pro-independence group on Saturday marched through downtown Pristina to protest against their local negotiating team and the UN plan on Kosovo's future status. The activists, from a group called Self-determination, chanted anti-UN slogans opposing the plan drafted by UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari that would see the province gain independence from Serbia, initially under international supervision. Serbia along with Russia has rejected the plan. Glauk Konjuvca, one of the Self-determination leaders said the people of Kosovo will "pay any price" to achieve full sovereignty. "We demonstrate for the referendum on self-determination rights for people of Kosovo. This right must immediately and conditionally realise for people of Kosovo for we are governed by an anti-democratic regime which denies the will of the people of Kosovo so we want a full sovereignty, and full freedom," Konjuvca said. During their peaceful march, held under the close observation of ethnic Albanian policemen along the main streets, the demonstrators carried banners, banged drums and chanted "self-determination". A large Kosovo flag was hung on the side of a city building. The anti-government demonstration comes a day after NATO's Secretary General asked Kosovo's ethnic Albanians to show restraint and moderation while their province's status was debated at the United Nations and also asked for flexibility from Serbia and its close ally, Russia. But leaders of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian community have warned that an indefinite postponement of the plan could led them to unilaterally break away from Serbia a move that many fear could spark more inter-communal violence. Kosovo, a province of two (m) million, of whom 90 percent are ethnic Albanians, has been run by the UN since mid-1999 when a NATO air war halted a crackdown by Serb forces on separatist rebels.
