Elvis recorded his versions of the song on January 10, 1956, at RCA studio's in Nashville Tennessee. The single did not chart, although it was a staple in most of Presley's shows during the 1950s and when he returned to perform live in 1969 all the way through 1977. "Poor Boy" was recorded on August 24, 1956. It appeared in the 1956 movie Love Me Tender released by 20th Century Fox. The song was released on an RCA Victor EP from the movie, Love Me Tender (EP), EPA-4006, which also included the title track, "We're Gonna Move", and "Let Me".
