UCLA Vietnamese Culture Night 2023: Can I Ask You? | Official Video

UCLA VSU is proud to present our 43rd Annual VCN: Can I Ask You Filmed on January 16, 2023. See below for timestamps. ****************************** THE STORY ****************************** This year's show will delve into the desire to know and understand more about the past experiences of the ones that we hold dear to ourselves, experiences that are often a generation or more away, and the reluctance to ask. Knowing that that past is one that is complicated by both trauma and war that exists within both our Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American identities, the choice to ask is a difficult one to make - for fear of bringing up the hurt and trauma that resides and is often leftover. This is a story about how our protagonist, Eleanor, grapples with both her questions and the desire to know more about her loved ones and their stories. As she prepares to return home for the one year death anniversary of her mother, ngày giỗ, she will be faced with the fact that since her mother's passing, she hasn't come back home - not once. Home is where she'll not only face her entire family, but the complex relationships between them. This show will explore grief, how we remember our loved ones and their legacies, and navigating how we love one another even in hard times.
