World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

Today is #WorldDayAgainstTraffickingInPersons. Trafficking in Persons is a global threat that affects us all, including in Malaysia and the United States. Every day, millions of men, women, and children around the world are affected by this scourge. Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to force victims to perform services or labor against their will for little or no pay. Combating trafficking in persons is a priority for the United States, and we are a partner in this with Malaysia. At the U.S. Embassy, we work closely with the government and civil society organizations to support their efforts to combat trafficking. Our partners include the organization Tenaganita, which helps the marginalized know their rights. And Good Shepherd, which helps victims rebuild their lives and get legal assistance. The government’s anti-trafficking entity, the MAPO Council, is a strong partner, as it leads an all-of-government approach to pass and enforce comprehensive anti-trafficking and worker protection laws, and otherwise improve protections for survivors. We also work with businesses to reduce and prevent forced labor. There is more work to be done. Most important is to prioritize protecting victims and treating them as victims, not criminals. Instead, the traffickers need to be prosecuted. And we need to work to prevent trafficking in the first place. COVID-19 presents a challenge to implementation. During these extraordinarily difficult times, however, we still need to come together to protect the most vulnerable among us. By working together across the public and private sectors - governments, non-profits, businesses, faith organizations, and individual households - we can confront and eliminate human trafficking. Any Malaysian citizen, just like any American citizen, needs to know about and care about Human Trafficking. Human trafficking is among the worst possible violations of human rights.
