It’s another shutdown week with the Senate back in town and the House remaining away. A series of converging deadlines this week may increase pressure on lawmakers as the government shutdown is set to enter its fifth week on Wednesday. Senators are set to play the same blame game they have for weeks. Henrietta Treyz Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Veda Partners joins to break down the latest on the government shutdown as well as the upcoming Virginia and New Jersey Governor races. The head of the country’s largest union of federal workers called for an end to the government shutdown Monday, ramping up pressure on Democrats to end the impasse. The labor union urged Senate Democrats to go along with Republicans’ long-standing demand that they accept a short-term funding package similar to one that the GOP-controlled House passed in September. Democrats have refused to pass the funding package and instead insisted that Republicans first renew expiring subsidies for Obamacare health insurance. “Reopen the government immediately under a clean continuing resolution that allows continued debate on larger issues,” wrote Everett Kelley, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union representing 820,000 federal and District of Columbia government workers. The federal government shutdown, the second longest in US history, is nearing the one-month mark as funding for food aid dwindles and air traffic control crunches accumulate. Most federal workers missed their first full paycheck last Friday. “Ensure back pay for every single employee who has served or been forced to stay home through no fault of their own. Work together on a bipartisan basis to address important policy matters like addressing rising costs and fixing the broken appropriations process,” Kelley said in comments posted to the AFGE website. A senior Senate Republican aide said the union statement could be a pivot point in the standoff and expressed hope Senate Democrats would pass GOP short-term funding package. -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: / bloombergradio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: / bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: / @markets Bloomberg Originals: / bloomberg Quicktake: / @bloombergquicktake
