K9 Officer Training Comes to NAU Campus

October 16, 2014 - NAZ Today's Emani Payne reports that Coconino County Sheriff's Office came to NAU's campus with K9 officers to give a safety demonstration for a class. Coconino County deputies are partnering with dogs in the line of duty to keep Flagstaff protected. Sanya Pedersen, NAU Health Science Instructor, hopes students will see this activity and become passionate about protecting people. Christie Wenstorm, Deputy Sheriff K9 Unit, says police dogs are not to be scared of and they are there for protection. These dogs are trained to be obedient to their partner's command. The K9 officers are not just used to attack, their enhanced senses are used to locate drugs. Rick Shouse, Deputy Sheriff K9 Unit, says that having a dog with him on duty changes the way people interact with him. Those interested in donating to the cause can call Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523.
