We are always looking for atypical adventures for our family. Experiences that will make an impression; ones that will stand out as "special" and never be forgotten. So when we were asked to join a sea turtle egg dig with a turtle patrol volunteer, we immediately said yes and the experience did not disappoint! On this adventure, we take you on a stroll along Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida to a special place where 113 baby sea turtles made their beautiful march to the sea just days before. We get hands on with Joe Moore, a turtle patrol volunteer, as he teaches us about the beauty of this natural phenomenon and why it is important to protect this endangered species. Traveling ABCs Adventure Tips This adventure may be a little more difficult to recreate, but if you have an interest in being a part of a sea turtle egg dig our suggestion would be for you to contact the local turtle patrol at a beach near you. Most sea turtles lay their eggs during the warmest months of the year and the incubation period lasts about two months. Turtle patrol volunteers track the nests on a daily basis and watch for turtle tracks to know if the eggs have completed the process. Once they are certain the eggs have hatched, they schedule a turtle egg dig to evaluate the hatching success of the nest. Please stay away from the protected areas around the nest unless you are observing with a turtle patrol volunteer. Tampering with a nest area can negatively effect the incubation process and it is illegal. Happy Adventuring!
