Venezuela has taken a dramatic step by suspending all energy cooperation agreements with Trinidad and Tobago, escalating tensions in an already fragile Caribbean gas market. This decision follows Trinidad’s recent allowance of a US warship to dock in its capital and participation in joint military exercises with the United States. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro condemned the actions, calling them a “military provocation” coordinated with the CIA and aimed at destabilizing the Caribbean region. The US destroyer USS Gravely, equipped with advanced weapons including long-range Tomahawk missiles and capable of launching helicopters, is currently stationed in Trinidad for a four-day visit. The presence of US marines and the joint training exercises with Trinidad’s defense forces have been strongly criticized by Venezuela, highlighting growing regional tensions. Trinidad lies just 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Venezuela’s coast at its closest point, making these developments particularly sensitive. Adding to the geopolitical complexity, Russian military engagement in Venezuela has intensified. An Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft, registration RA-78765, landed in Caracas after a circuitous two-day journey from Russia, with stops in Armenia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, and Mauritania. The flight path suggests efforts to avoid Western airspace and potential inspections, reflecting Russia’s strategic caution. The Il-76, capable of carrying up to 50 tons of cargo or 200 personnel, has historically been used to transport military supplies, small arms, and mercenaries. This multi-faceted scenario underscores the convergence of US and Russian influence in Venezuela and the Caribbean. As energy cooperation halts, military posturing escalates, and foreign involvement deepens, the region faces heightened geopolitical uncertainty. Analysts warn that such developments could have broader implications for energy security, regional stability, and international relations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
