Proposed bill would enforce harsher penalties for school hoax calls in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Legislators are taking aim at people who call in fake school shooting reports. One lawmaker said the penalties for these hoaxes aren’t strong enough, and he’s drafting a bill that would give harsher sentences to the people behind the fake calls. Back in March, police and educators received fake active shooter reports in nearly a dozen schools across Utah. Eight different counties in Utah were hit with hoax calls of an active shooting, sending police agencies and hospitals into a full-blown panic. Rep. Ryan Wilcox said McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center were told to make room for heavy casualties coming in from a fake shooting at Ogden High School. He said hospital workers were told seven people were already killed.
