Believe it or not, Jagged Little Pill wasn’t the debut of the artist known as Alanis Morissette. Leading up to that monster release, new jack swing was her jam. So when her third album finally landed, it was no miracle debut. Instead, Jagged Little Pill gave voice to an artist who had finally found herself. Little did she know, she would also become the voice of a generation. Jagged Little Pill marked a dramatic departure for Morissette in more ways than one. The change in sound was an obvious one. Gone were the synth stabs, samples and cheesy raps. In came gritty guitars, raw vocals and larger than life choruses. In other words, all the hallmarks of an artist who lived a lifetime through grunge... isn’t it ironic that Morissette was only 21 years old at the time? The genius of Morissette was that she was able to play with the tropes of the genre, take its elements, and transform it into a string of undeniable pop hits. This sensation of rebirth, of being comfortable in your own skin, of learning to accept yourself despite having the weight of the world on your shoulders.
