Isiah Thomas Wrecks His Specs

November 6, 1990 - On the heels of a Finals MVP performance just a few months prior in which he averaged 27.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7 assists, Detroit Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas kicked off the 1990-91 season with a new look. After sustaining a torn tear duct in an exhibition game against the Seattle SuperSonics (Oct. 20), Thomas turned to rec specs as a means of maintaining his orbital integrity. Teammate Bill Laimbeer sustained a fractured cheekbone the same game after absorbing an elbow to the grill courtesy of Olden Polynice. In a regular season rematch with the Sonics mere weeks after sustaining his preseason eye injury, Thomas struggled through a 3-for-13 performance in a 100-92 loss.
